Three main stages can be distinguished in the development of carpet weaving in Chiprovtsi: constructive, decorative and ornamental.
The first stage, called constructive, covers the period from the origin of carpet weaving till the end of the 18th century. There are two factors from this early stage of development, which influence and define its style. On one hand, the less than mastered technique, and, on the other hand, the hardened religious dogmas and perceptions of the Turkish population, which is the major consumer. It is known that the Koran forbids the depiction of people, animals and plants.
The carpets, known under the names of "Bakams" or "Caribalda" originate during that period. They have been made in four main colours - ochre, brown, blue and green. The motives comprise geometrical figures: triangles, rhombs and their combinations - makazi, kanatitsi (stylized butterflies), and candlesticks. The composition is strict and clear. It only consists of a field with identical motifs, or of a field and one, two or more borders.
